Case Study – Traditional Lead Cottage Style Windows

Aluminium is an excellent replacement for traditional LEAD COTTAGE STYLE windows.

The brief

Our client lives in a beautiful example of an Arts and Crafts house with lead cottage style windows. He wanted to update his windows without diminishing the character of the period property. This property is probably one of the best examples of a typical Arts and Crafts property with the original oak frames and single glazed Crittall windows. He wanted to replace the old steel windows for all the benefits of modern double glazed windows such as; improving thermal values and reducing heating bills, without compromising the character and beauty of his home.

Our approach

The client chose The Window Sanctuary because we specialise in replacing old steel windows with slimline Heritage aluminium windows. These can be fitted into the original timber frames. This ensures that the character and period look is maintained. Every detail of the new windows is considered, from the slimline frames to the lead used on the glass and the handles we suggest. To ensure this level of detail, we control the entire process from start to finish, which is why we only use directly employed fitters. Our fitters take the care and attention required to ensure a first class installation and finish. This is especially true when working on heritage period properties such as this one, as our fitters needed to deepen the existing rebates of the timber frames, which is a carpentry skill.

Product focus

We used Alitherm Heritage windows fitted into the original timber frames. These are a flexible product and come in a slimline depth of 47mm. The frame has been designed to replicate and replace old steel Crittall windows and can be fitted directly back into the original timber frames or to the brickwork on modern homes.

To create the window within the stone gothic arch, our surveyor took a template whilst he was onsite to create a bespoke frame. This was achieved by shaping and cutting the metal in the same finish as the other windows. The window was fitted directly into the stone so that it closely matched the original style.

We used black antique lead on this project as an aged lead on older properties looks amazing.

The result

The client was delighted that he was able to keep his original timber frames and the period look of the property. The end result is a Chocolate Box house that has retained its aesthetic look and feel but now with modern windows.

  • One year ago we had our windows and doors installed. We are very happy with the product so far. What made me write a review one year later is their amazing customer service. Our door needed adjustment and I asked someone to look at it and fix it. They send an engineer the next day, who came on time and managed to fix it. Very pleased. As it is quite rare these days, companies cut corners and dont look after their clients.

  • A great experience with these guys from beginning to end. We had 2 windows replaced and had them altered to larger sizes. Also had 2 doors replaced, one to a full size which meant taking out walls and sidelights. A messy job but the team came in and within 2 days it was out with the old ones, all rubble taken away, and new frames in. The second team then came in to install the glass and the bars and make good the walls inside and out to a fine finish. Couldn't fault it. Amazing work. Would and have recommended this company to everyone who has seen and admired our new windows and doors. A++++

  • From the start The Window Sanctuary were friendly and polite and a pleasure to deal with. They offered lots of advice, especially helpful as our installation was a little tricky. We also had lots of issues with our extension which caused delays our end, which The Window Sanctuary worked around, even though it meant the installation had to be carried out in two lots, when initially it was meant to happen in one go - they were very accommodating and patient, thank you! Would definitely recommend.
