Case Study – Traditional Lead Cottage Style Windows

Aluminium is an excellent replacement for traditional LEAD COTTAGE STYLE windows.

The brief

Our client lives in a beautiful example of an Arts and Crafts house with lead cottage style windows. He wanted to update his windows without diminishing the character of the period property. This property is probably one of the best examples of a typical Arts and Crafts property with the original oak frames and single glazed Crittall windows. He wanted to replace the old steel windows for all the benefits of modern double glazed windows such as; improving thermal values and reducing heating bills, without compromising the character and beauty of his home.

Our approach

The client chose The Window Sanctuary because we specialise in replacing old steel windows with slimline Heritage aluminium windows. These can be fitted into the original timber frames. This ensures that the character and period look is maintained. Every detail of the new windows is considered, from the slimline frames to the lead used on the glass and the handles we suggest. To ensure this level of detail, we control the entire process from start to finish, which is why we only use directly employed fitters. Our fitters take the care and attention required to ensure a first class installation and finish. This is especially true when working on heritage period properties such as this one, as our fitters needed to deepen the existing rebates of the timber frames, which is a carpentry skill.

Product focus

We used Alitherm Heritage windows fitted into the original timber frames. These are a flexible product and come in a slimline depth of 47mm. The frame has been designed to replicate and replace old steel Crittall windows and can be fitted directly back into the original timber frames or to the brickwork on modern homes.

To create the window within the stone gothic arch, our surveyor took a template whilst he was onsite to create a bespoke frame. This was achieved by shaping and cutting the metal in the same finish as the other windows. The window was fitted directly into the stone so that it closely matched the original style.

We used black antique lead on this project as an aged lead on older properties looks amazing.

The result

The client was delighted that he was able to keep his original timber frames and the period look of the property. The end result is a Chocolate Box house that has retained its aesthetic look and feel but now with modern windows.

Our Google Reviews

  • We had a few quotes for 2 x black aluminium windows and French aluminium doors with fixed side panels. The Window Sanctuary were the most competitively priced and were quick to respond to our quote request and follow up questions. The timeline they gave for delivery and installation was accurate and the installers did a great job. We are really happy with our high quality and stylish looking doors and windows! Makes such a difference to our house.

  • A great experience with The Window Sanctuary. They supplied and installed some celestial windows and roof lights to a loft conversion that we carried out. It is a period property with original sash windows and it was important to us that the new windows were in keeping with the character of the original house. We are delighted with the finished product. The customer service was very good and they were amenable when our architect got carried away and the window sizes increased quite materially from the original quotation - thereby working hard to minimise the extra costs. The quotation process was quick and efficient. Their surveyor, Steve, was very professional and also had a strong technical knowledge to help advise us during the build stage. The installation team were very professional and worked extremely hard to get the windows fitted during poor weather. The lady on the front desk, Jeannette, was also very friendly/helpful despite my numerous calls to the office throughout the process. There were a few delays but this was the result of CoVid as opposed to anything in their control, and Simon worked hard to get the order pushed through the suppliers and installed promptly. I always like to support local businesses and this one did not disappoint. Will definitely use them again going forward for any further works. Thank you.
