Case Study – Traditional Sash Windows

Georgian style timber traditional sash windows

The brief

This is an early Georgian property and the customer requested a modern equivalent of the original timber sash windows. They needed all the benefits of 28mm double glazing that you get with modern sash windows, traditional glazing bars (which sit on the outside of the unit to give the effect of individual panes), coupled with decorative horns and traditional ropes and weights with brass fittings on the inside. It was very much a like for like replacement.

Our approach

As soon as the client contacted us, we arranged a site visit to assess their existing windows so that we could look at the detail and ensure that we were going to be manufacturing like for like replacements. This included everything from the bars, decorative horns and the colour of the furniture. On the inside, we made sure we achieved a like for like replacement for the architrave and window boards, which in this instance were necessary to replace, as part of the whole package.

Once the client had decided to proceed, they came to the showroom to run through all the finer details with us. We then sent our company surveyor out to complete a thorough survey and take care of all the health and safety elements, even as far as protecting the customer’s rose bushes, through to putting carpet protectors down. All this attention to detail ensures we provide outstanding customer care. There is usually a 10-12 week lead time, during which we process and order the materials. Our Operations Administration Team are in regular contact with the client providing regular updates during this time. When it comes to installation day, we only use our own experienced teams of fitters, employed directly by us, to ensure all the work is carried out to an exceptionally high standard.

  • I came to the Window Sanctuary after another window company had sold and fitted windows that were completely inappropriate for replicating the original 1920's Crittall windows, although this was the brief they had. The Window Sanctuary proved to have an entirely different approach: they could not have taken more care to ensure that every detail mirrored the Crittall originals, and that the windows were exactly what I wanted. I understand that the Window Sanctuary has generations of window making and fitting behind them, and it shows. Some of the new windows had to go into the original 1920's frames, and the WS fitting team's joinery skills were outstanding in being able to rout back the wood really carefully to make sure that the new windows had a completely solid fit. This was in contrast to the previous company's fitting team, who I can only describe as butchering the frames to get their windows in, causing a waterfall inside the windows when it rained. The Window Sanctuary are a team of very skilled craftsmen: I learned first hand how rare this is. Thank you.

  • We used The Window Sanctuary for two jobs on our property, a complete replacement of windows on our barn and then on our main home. I think in total over 40 windows or so including internal doors and substantial bifolds. All in all we worked together for just under 2 years and it was totally seamless, from design stage all the way through to final installations. Honestly I cannot recommend Oliver, Geoff and team enough, and I love that they are a local business - the service really was too notch.

  • We had a few quotes for 2 x black aluminium windows and French aluminium doors with fixed side panels. The Window Sanctuary were the most competitively priced and were quick to respond to our quote request and follow up questions. The timeline they gave for delivery and installation was accurate and the installers did a great job. We are really happy with our high quality and stylish looking doors and windows! Makes such a difference to our house.

  • From the start The Window Sanctuary were friendly and polite and a pleasure to deal with. They offered lots of advice, especially helpful as our installation was a little tricky. We also had lots of issues with our extension which caused delays our end, which The Window Sanctuary worked around, even though it meant the installation had to be carried out in two lots, when initially it was meant to happen in one go - they were very accommodating and patient, thank you! Would definitely recommend.
